Porte de Mérantais
Facts and practical information
The Mérantais Gate was one of the 24 gates in the surrounding wall of Louis XIV's Grand Parc de chasse. It was built in 1684 by Jules Hardouin-Mansart on the same architectural model as all the other gates/guardhouses of the Grand Parc, with a large carriage gate next to the guard's house. It is currently located in the commune of Magny-les-Hameaux in the Yvelines, on the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines National Golf Course.
The Mérantais gate was one of the main gates south of the Grand Parc enclosure. It opened onto the Mérantais estate, renamed "Solitude du Mérantais" in the mid-17th century under the influence of Guillaume Le Roy, a fervent friend of Port-Royal, whose abbey of Port-Royal des Champs was nearby.
Its facades and roofs are listed as historical monuments by order of February 13, 1989. It is visible from the departmental road 36.
