Church of Our Lady, Fontenay-le-Comte
Facts and practical information
Notre Dame Church is a Roman Catholic church, located in Fontenay-le-Comte, in the southeastern part of the Vendée region of France. The church was attached from 1317 to 1648 to the former diocese of Maillezais, before the latter was transferred to the diocese of La Rochelle. Since the Concordat of June 11, 1817, the church is now in the diocese of Luçon.
If the existence of an earlier building from the Romanesque period is attested by the presence of a crypt, the church was entirely rebuilt in the 15th century in the flamboyant Gothic style. This construction was the victim of several destructions during the wars of religion in the 16th century, destroying the vaults and damaging the spire, and was transformed into a temple of the Reason in 1794. The building was gradually restored through a series of restorations during the 19th and 20th centuries.
The church was listed as a historical monument in 1862.
