Abbatiale Saint-Maixent, Saint-Maixent-l'École

The abbey church of Saint-Maixent-l'École is the church of the former abbey of Saint-Maixent, in the commune of Saint-Maixent-l'École.

In 1790, at the time of the civil constitution of the clergy, it became the episcopal see of the newly created diocese of Deux-Sèvres within the framework of the constitutional church, and took the title of cathedral. It kept this title until the concordat of 1801, which consecrated the disappearance of the diocese and its reincorporation into the diocese of Poitiers. Since then, it is used as a parish church.
