Pont du Moulin, Thorame-Haute
Facts and practical information
The Pont du Moulin is a bridge over the Verdon, built in the second half of the 17th century in the commune of Thorame-Haute. Built on two very unequal arches of 20 and 5 meters in diameter, for a total length of 41 meters and a width of 2.3 meters, its height varies from 7 to 11 meters above the Verdon river bed.
This bridge has an architectural interest that has earned it a place on many illustrations and postcards. Raymond Collier notes that it is exceptional for the time of its construction. It is classified as a historical monument by decree of March 25, 1977.
In 2017, the bridge is in a very degraded state, but its vaults remain well preserved. However, it is dangerous to use it because it is unprotected and partly collapsed. A municipal bylaw prohibits access. The question of its renovation has preoccupied the town hall and local associations of heritage preservation for several decades. In April 2018, it was selected as an emblematic site for funding by the heritage lottery wanted by the President of the Republic and supported by Stéphane Bern.
Despite its classification, it has not been maintained for a long time. Today, it only serves a small, poorly maintained path that provides very difficult access to the Serpeigier mountain.
