Château de Sainte-Suzanne, Sainte-Suzanne
Facts and practical information
The castle of Sainte-Suzanne is a fortified castle dating from the 11th century, located in Sainte-Suzanne, in the French department of Mayenne. Its ramparts, like those of the medieval city, are classified as a historical monument since 1862, and the dwelling, built between 1608 and 1610-1613 by Guillaume Fouquet de la Varenne, is classified by order of December 28, 1984. Besieged by the Duke of Normandy and King of England William the Conqueror from 1083 to 1086, it is the only stronghold that the Conqueror could not take.
Today it is the property of the Mayenne departmental council, and since June 2009 it has housed the Centre d'interprétation de l'architecture et du patrimoine of the Pays d'art et d'histoire Coëvrons-Mayenne, and more generally of the Mayenne department.
