Facts and practical information
The Lille Zoological Park, also known locally as the Bois de Boulogne Zoological Park, is a French zoological park located in the Hauts-de-France region, in the Vauban Esquermes district of the city of Lille, at the foot of the citadel. Opened in 1950, and owned by the city of Lille, it presents today some 450 animals of 110 different species on 3.5 hectares. It is directed by Sophie Dardalhon since March 2020.
It is a permanent member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums and is involved in ex-situ conservation by participating in European Endangered Species Programs. It is also a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
The free entrance, in force until 2016, has contributed to make it one of the most visited tourist sites in the province and one of the five most visited zoological parks in France. It is the first tourist site in the region with nearly one million visitors per year. It has an annual budget of 1.7 million euros and will be charging visitors from outside Lille from 2017.
It is organized into 6 thematic zones entitled: Around the World, Exotic Journey, African Lands, South American Excursion, From Island to Island and Under the Tropics.
