Parterre du Midi, Versailles
Facts and practical information
The Parterre du Midi is a flowerbed with two circular basins, located in the park of the Palace of Versailles.
The entrance is via a staircase where two of the oldest sculptures in the park are located, the "Children with Sphynxes", installed since 1685. These children, also called "Amours" were cast in 1668 by Amboise Duval after a model by Jacques Sarazin and placed on marble sphynxes by Louis Lerambert and Jacques Houzeau.
Overlooking the Orangery, the parterre du Midi was initially laid out by Louis Le Vau in 1663 and was then composed of "sanded compartments on which boxwood interlacing, pyramid-shaped yew trees and grass arabesques stood out". The surface area doubled to reach its current dimensions when Jules Hardouin-Mansart built the South Wing and the Orangery in 1682.
