Basilique Notre-Dame, La Chapelle-Montligeon
Facts and practical information
The Basilica of Our Lady of Montligeon, dedicated to "Our Lady Liberator of the souls in Purgatory", is a pilgrimage church, the center of a shrine dedicated to prayer for the dead. It is located in La Chapelle-Montligeon, a small town in the Perche region, in the southeast of the Orne department.
The creation of the pilgrimage center is due to the initiative and tireless determination of Abbé Paul Buguet, parish priest of La Chapelle-Montligeon from 1878 until his death in 1918. Concerned about the need to pray for the souls of the deceased as well as to revitalize the economy of his village, he founded in 1884 the "Oeuvre expiatoire pour la délivrance des âmes du purgatoire" and was encouraged in his action by Pope Leo XIII, from whom he received the title of Apostolic Protonotary.
The basilica is a vast neo-gothic building erected from 1894 to 1911 by the architect Maître Tessier, which gathers a number of works of art. Its stained glass windows, which equip all the windows, are renowned and have the double particularity of constituting a panorama of the art of glass from 1917 to 1971 and of dealing only with the theme of Eschatology and the Communion of Saints.
Around the basilica there is an important sanctuary with several buildings dedicated to its various activities.
