St. Peter's Church
Facts and practical information
The Saint-Pierre church is the remnant of a Cluniac priory established at the end of the 11th century, which gave its name to the commune of Saint-Pierre-d'Allevard. The conventual buildings were demolished in 1780, but the religious building was preserved from the revolutionary destruction. The bell tower, dating from the original Romanesque buildings, belongs to a monumental family of bell towers that can be found in a few other localities in the department. The parish church underwent important modifications from 1929 to 1930 under the impulse of the parish priest Graëff, which deeply transformed its interior aspect, making disappear various architectural and pictorial ancient elements. The important restoration work on the walls of the nave undertaken during the first half of 2012 should allow the building to serenely enter its second millennium.
