Abbatiale Sainte-Marie, Cruas
Facts and practical information
The Sainte-Marie abbey is a Romanesque abbey located in Cruas, in the French department of Ardèche in France. This abbey was built on the ruins of a Gallo-Roman villa and an early Christian building. Consecrated in 1095, enlarged in the 12th century, it suffered from the floods and the wars of religion and was abandoned. Re-occupied by monks from 1628 to 1741, it has been classified as a historical monument since 1862.
A rare monastic tribune and remarkably preserved ornate capitals are the most characteristic aspects of the building.
