Built on a rocky limestone spur dominating the upper Rhone River by more than 200 meters, the site is defended by an artificial levee that delimits an area of 21 hectares. The site has been classified as a historical monument since April 12, 1983, when it is also referenced as the barred spur of Annoisin-Chatelans.
