Château-Gaillard, Amboise
Facts and practical information
The royal domain of Château-Gaillard, wanted by Charles VIII on his return from the first Italian war, is located in Amboise in the Loire Valley. It includes a royal dwelling that is one of the castles of the Loire, and is located at the foot of the southern flank of the Châteliers spur, in the immediate vicinity of Clos-Lucé.
The Château-Gaillard estate was a "laboratory" of the French Renaissance: the first acclimatization garden in France with the creation of the first French royal orangery, the first French Renaissance garden created by Dom Pacello da Mercogliano with the realization of the first axial landscape perspective and the first "French-style" flowerbeds, the first French transposition of Italian Renaissance architecture embodied by the Medici villas in Florence. The royal estate of Château-Gaillard was registered as a historical monument in 1963. After five years of restoration, the estate was opened to the public in 2014.
