Château de Montagu, Marcoussis
Facts and practical information
The castle of Montagu is a ruined French castle located in the commune of Marcoussis, in the Hurepoix region in the current department of Essonne and the Île-de-France region, twenty-six kilometers southwest of Paris.
Recognized as one of the most beautiful achievements of the late Middle Ages, the castle became, after the Hundred Years War, one of the most prized residences of the kings of France. Close to the capital, it became an exclusive hunting ground for the kings. In the middle of the 16th century, it became famous for hosting the princes of Condé and Conti with their brother-in-law, the Duke of Longueville, during the Fronde. Forgotten and then partly destroyed during the French Revolution, it was rediscovered about fifty years ago by Roland Payen, then by the Historical Association of Marcoussis.
