Chartreuse de Pierre-Châtel, Virignin
Facts and practical information
The Carthusian monastery of Pierre-Châtel is a former fortress that became a fortified monastery, mentioned in the 14th century, whose remains stand in the town of Virignin in the Ain department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It succeeded to an ancient fortified castle of the 13th century of the counts of Savoy, and the site was refortified in the 19th century after the departure of the Carthusian monks.
All of the Cartusian buildings, surrounding and retaining walls, towers, entrance gates, courtyards, former gardens and terraces of the former Carthusian monastery, including the remains of the Count's castle, as well as the elements of the 19th century fortification located in the area known as "Fort-de-Pierre-Châtel" were classified as historic monuments by a decree of February 1, 1996, which was replaced by a more comprehensive classification on March 9, 2015.
