Musée Balaguier, Toulon
Facts and practical information
Fort Balaguier or Fort Balaguier is a military structure located in the commune of La Seyne-sur-Mer.
It was built in 1636 in order to protect the Toulon roadstead from intrusions. Its construction was decided and undertaken after an inspection of the coasts of Provence by Henri de Séguiran, first president of the parliament of Provence and lieutenant of the grand master of navigation, Cardinal de Richelieu. The aim was to counter the warlike intentions of the House of Habsburg in the Mediterranean. In the same movement, Richelieu built a series of defensive towers on the coasts of Provence from Antibes to the island of Embiez, passing by the islands of Hyères.
