Gonio Fortress, Batumi

Nestled on the edge of the Black Sea near the vibrant city of Batumi, Georgia, lies the historical gem of Gonio Fortress. An archaeological site of significant importance, the fortress offers a rare glimpse into the ancient Roman military architecture and the rich tapestry of Georgia's long and storied past.

The Gonio Fortress, also known as Apsaros, or Apsaruntos, dates back to the 1st century AD, when it was established as a Roman outpost. With its strategic position near the mouth of the Chorokhi River, the fortress played a key role in protecting the eastern borders of the Roman Empire. The site later fell under Byzantine and then Ottoman control, reflecting the turbulent history of the region.

The fortress boasts a well-preserved rectangular plan, with walls stretching over 900 meters in circumference and reaching up to 5 meters in height. Its formidable structure includes 18 towers and several gates, which have stood the test of time and bear witness to the fortification's military significance. Excavations have unearthed various artifacts, including Roman inscriptions, mosaic fragments, and remnants of structures that offer invaluable insights into the daily lives of the soldiers and civilians who once inhabited Gonio.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Gonio Fortress is its association with the legend of the Apostle Matthew.
