Balkan green lizard

The Balkan green lizard, a species within the Lacertidae family, is notably widespread, occupying a diverse range of habitats. These vibrant reptiles can be found throughout the Balkans, in countries such as Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, and Serbia. Their range extends further into Israel, Syria, and Turkey.

These lizards exhibit remarkable adaptability regarding their living environments. They flourish in Mediterranean-type shrubby landscapes, sandy beaches, farmlands, pastures, plantations, and even rural gardens. Despite their adaptability, the Balkan green lizard faces a significant threat: habitat loss, which endangers their population.

Their reproductive habits are particularly intriguing. For instance, in Greece, the breeding season for these lizards spans from April to July. Both males and females reach sexual maturity when their body length reaches approximately 80 millimeters. This information provides valuable insight into the behavior and life cycle of these fascinating creatures in their natural surroundings.
