Facts About Tentura
Tentura, sometimes spelled Tentoura, Tintura, or Tintoura, is a delightful liqueur that's been a staple of the Greek city of Patras since the 15th century. Its name derives from the Italian word "tinctura" which means tincture. This liqueur is crafted by infusing various types of distilled alcohol with a blend of herbs and spices, then sweetening it to perfection.
Typically, the base alcohol for Tentura is brandy from Patras, but rum or grain alcohol can also be used. The distinctive flavor comes from a combination of cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, and citrus fruits, which also impart a unique dark orange-red color. Locally, it’s known as "moschovolithra." With an alcohol content of about 25%, it offers a pleasant kick without being overpowering.
Tentura is usually enjoyed chilled or over ice in a small glass after a meal to aid digestion. It can also be added to espresso coffee to make a delightful "espresso corretto." If you prefer, you can even sip it at room temperature. Whether you’re winding down after dinner or adding a twist to your coffee, Tentura offers a taste of Greek tradition that’s hard to beat.
