Rotunda, Thessaloniki
Facts and practical information
The Rotunda of Thessaloniki, also known as the Rotunda of Galerius, stands as a testament to the city's rich historical tapestry. This cylindrical structure, with its impressive 30-meter diameter and 30-meter height, was built in 306 AD during the reign of the Roman Emperor Galerius. It was originally intended to serve as his mausoleum, but it has since functioned as a church and a mosque, reflecting the diverse cultural influences that have swept through Thessaloniki over the centuries.
The architectural grandeur of the Rotunda is evident in its massive walls, which measure 6.3 meters in thickness, ensuring its survival through numerous earthquakes. The interior is equally striking, adorned with finely preserved mosaics that date back to the early Christian period when the building was converted into a church dedicated to Asomatoi (the Archangels).
In the 16th century, during the Ottoman occupation, the Rotunda was transformed into a mosque known as the Mosque of Suleyman Hortaji Effendi, and a minaret was added to its structure. Despite the changes, the integrity of the original design remained intact.
Today, the Rotunda is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a cultural beacon in Thessaloniki. It is open to the public, inviting visitors to explore its historical layers and enjoy panoramic views of the city from its elevated position. The Rotunda also hosts various exhibitions and cultural events, continuing its legacy as a dynamic hub of activity.
