Chrysoskalitissa Monastery

Perched on the edge of a high rocky cliff on the island of Crete, the Chrysoskalitissa Monastery is a beacon of serenity overlooking the expansive azure waters of the Mediterranean Sea. This historic monastery, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is located approximately 72 kilometers southwest of Chania and is often associated with the golden step legend—a myth that suggests one of the 90 steps leading to the monastery is made of gold, but only those free of sin can see it.

The Chrysoskalitissa Monastery, which translates to "golden-stepped," dates back to the 17th century, although some sources suggest that a church was present at the site as early as the 12th century. The monastery is renowned for its striking white-washed walls, which contrast vividly against the stark natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. It is a revered site of pilgrimage, particularly for the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, celebrated on the 15th of August each year.
