New Parliament Building, St. George's
Facts and practical information
The New Parliament Building in St. George's, Grenada, stands as a testament to the island's commitment to democracy and the rule of law. Officially opened on June 21, 2018, this modern facility replaced the former parliament building, which was severely damaged by Hurricane Ivan in 2004.
Located at Mt. Wheldale, the New Parliament Building is perched on a historic site overlooking the picturesque capital of St. George's. The building's design is a blend of contemporary architecture and traditional Grenadian elements, symbolizing the fusion of progress and cultural heritage. It features a main chamber for parliamentary sittings, offices for members of parliament and staff, as well as committee rooms and public galleries.
One of the most striking features of the New Parliament Building is its geometric dome, which mirrors the shape of a nutmeg pod, paying homage to one of Grenada's key exports and symbols. The facility is not only a place for political discourse and legislative action but also serves as a symbol of resilience and renewal for the Grenadian people.
Funded by the governments of Australia, the United Arab Emirates, Mexico, and Grenada, as well as by the OPEC Fund for International Development, the construction of the New Parliament Building represents international cooperation and support for Grenada's governance infrastructure.
