Gulács
Facts and practical information
Gulács is a witness mountain of the Tapolca Basin, 393 metres high. Of volcanic origin, it is made of basalt. On the western side of the mountain is the village of Nemesgulács.
Like the other witness hills of the Tapolca basin, it is made of basalt, which was once mined for road-building purposes. The quarry was in operation until 1961, and the scars of the mountain are still visible. The vineyards on the hill were already flourishing in Roman times. The most notable grape varieties are Olaszrizling, Gray Friend, Green Riesling, Muscat Ottonel and Zweigelt.
The name of the mountain comes from the Old Hungarian name Gula, which first appeared in written sources in 1268. At that time there were two, later three settlements called Gulács: Alsó-, Felső- and Középső-.
Gulács is also on the route of the National Blue Trail, which also passes by the Sér well. This is a spring on the side of the mountain. However, the route does not go up to the summit, which can be reached by following the blue triangle sign.
