Drégely Castle played a pivotal role in defending the Kingdom of Hungary, especially during the Ottoman invasions of the 16th century. The castle's most famous moment came in 1552 when a small garrison led by the valiant captain Szondy György faced an overwhelming Ottoman force. Despite the odds, the defenders fought fiercely before the castle ultimately fell, and Szondy became a national hero for his sacrifice.
Today, visitors to Drégely Castle can walk along the remnants of the city wall and imagine the once impregnable fortification that stood there.
