Somlói vár
Facts and practical information
The Somló Castle is located near Doba, on the northern side of the basaltic Somló Mountain, in a dense forest. The castle used to be difficult to reach; in front of the southern side is an eight-metre dry ditch, which ends in a ravine at one end and in the mountain at the other. The layout of the castle is irregular, with internal towers and several courtyards. An intact drawbridge crosses the ravine and leads to an alleyway, which now leads to the courtyard. This area is bounded on the west by the guard's dome-vaulted quarters, with stone walls to the south and east. From the forecourt, access to the inner courtyard is via a drawbridge and an equally narrow alleyway. Here is the castle's most distinctive hexagonal tower. According to old writings, the kitchen may have been located here. It is now thought to have served as a chapel.
The castle ruin is a state-owned monument registered under number 9845.
