Wenckheim-kastély
Facts and practical information
Located in the Körös-Maros National Park, the Wenckheim Manor in Freiskígyosz is one of the most important in Hungary and was built between 1875 and 1879 in neo-Renaissance and eclectic style, according to the plans of Miklós Ybl. It is one of the best preserved castles in Békés County. In 2018, as part of the National Castle and Fortress Programme, the renovation of the castle began after the Hungarian government won a HUF 1.5 billion EU grant for its restoration. The castle park has been a nature reserve since 1954. Wenckheim Castle is a pure eclecticism, a typical cavalcade of styles, which, according to art historians, is an authentic testimony to the feudal capitalism of the period. The Hungarian feature film "Love Emilia Odor!", which premiered in 1970, was shot in Wenckheim Manor and its park.
