Aquasziget, Esztergom
Facts and practical information
The Aquasziget Thermal, Experience and Spa Baths is a spa complex in Esztergom, designed by József Finta, Ybl and Kossuth Prize-winning architect. The spa opened in November 2005.
In 2000, a concept for the realisation of a new thermal and leisure spa on the island of Primate Island was drawn up. In the course of this project, the karst water resources below Esztergom were also investigated. The experts considered the water, with a temperature of 29-30 °C and a mineral content of around 20-80 mg/l, to be suitable for spa development. In 2001, the town submitted a successful application to the Ministry of Industry and Trade for the construction of the spa under the Széchenyi Plan. In addition to the HUF 900 million gross grant, Esztergom invested a further HUF 2.2 billion from its own resources and loans. The spa complex was completed in 2005. The architectural studio of József Finta was awarded the design contract following a call for tenders for the 1.8 hectare project. The futuristic structure of the new spa is surrounded by greenery and blends in with its surroundings. Its 16-metre-high glass wall to the north and its open-air pools offer a picturesque view of the castle. The 15 000 m² building, with 11 pools, has three separate areas: the adventure pool, the wellness area and the spa area, where a full range of spa services are provided with the support of the Social Security.
Aquasziget Esztergom's pools include a giant indoor adventure pool with geyser, waterfall, bubbles and cave, an indoor relaxation pool with massaging water jets, an eight-person jacuzzi pool and a children's water world with a fun splashing clown head and a built-in turtle. The outdoor area is open exclusively from 1 May to 31 August, during the summer season. During the winter season, and until the start of the summer holidays, the outdoor pools are available for use via the swimming pool and the outdoor relaxation pool, which are accessible via the slides. In addition to the pools, the indoor area of the water park offers an infrared sauna, a decorative pool, a mini terrarium, a show kitchen, a beer bar and lounge chairs.
