Pallavicini-kastély, Ópusztaszer
Facts and practical information
The Pallavicini Castle is located in the present Ópusztaszer, formerly Sövényháza, in Csongrád-Csanád county.
The Pallavicini family did not use it as a central castle, but rather as a hunting lodge, a venue for celebrations and receptions. The Pallavici family acquired the estate by purchase in 1803. The castle was built in the late 1800s to replace the one destroyed in the great flood of 1879, and was completed in 1910.
The building consists of a basement, a cellar, a ground floor and an upper floor. A carriage driveway, common at the time, is also part of the castle, but this is not visible today as in the former system the public road runs behind the castle rather than in front of it, so this hidden asset remains hidden to many. In the 1980s, a modern 4-storey building was added to the castle, the entrance to which now faces the road, so there is nothing in common in style or location between the two buildings.
After the Second World War it was completely looted. Since the 1960s, the castle has been used as a psychiatric home. Major Charles Pallavicini, who died a few years ago, took note of the fact that he could not get it back from the state.
The gardens of the building still contain period trees from the manor's time, which are mostly visible to outsiders and are protected.
