Imagine Peace Tower, Reykjavík

The Imagine Peace Tower is a beacon of harmony situated in the vibrant city of Reykjavík, Iceland. This memorial, dedicated to the memory of John Lennon, was unveiled on October 9, 2007, on what would have been his 67th birthday. Conceptualized by Yoko Ono, Lennon's widow, the tower is a symbol of the couple's enduring advocacy for world peace.

The installation is located on Viðey Island, a serene setting just off the coast of Reykjavík, and is constructed of a white stone monument that houses a powerful light beam. This light, which is projected from the monument into the sky, creates a column of illumination visible from various points in the city. The strength and brightness of the light represent the continuing fight for global peace and the hope for a world without violence.

Engraved on the base of the tower are the words "Imagine Peace" in 24 different languages, reflecting the universal message of the memorial. The artwork also integrates a series of geothermal-powered lights that shine upwards, symbolizing the light of hope, peace, and Lennon's legacy. The memorial is surrounded by a number of trees, known as the Peace Trees, where visitors are encouraged to attach messages of peace.

The Imagine Peace Tower is lit annually from October 9th, Lennon's birthday, until December 8th, the anniversary of his death. It is also illuminated on other significant dates, such as New Year's Eve, the first day of spring, and during Reykjavík's Winter Lights Festival.
