Naqsh-e Jahan Square, Isfahan

Naqsh-e Jahan Square, also known as Imam Square, is a historic marvel located at the heart of the city of Isfahan, Iran. This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the largest city squares in the world and an outstanding example of Iranian and Islamic architecture. The square measures approximately 160 meters wide by 560 meters long, and its grandeur and significance have been a focal point since the 17th century, during the Safavid dynasty.

The square is flanked by magnificent structures on all four sides: to the north, the 17th-century Ali Qapu Palace stands with its majestic elevated terrace overlooking the square; to the east, the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque showcases intricate tile work and a beautifully dome; to the south, the grand Shah Mosque, now known as Imam Mosque, with its stunning architecture, invites the faithful for prayer; and to the west, the entrance to the Qeysarie Bazaar offers a gateway to the thrills of traditional commerce and craftsmanship.

Naqsh-e Jahan Square was designed to showcase the power and glory of Shah Abbas I's empire and served as a central gathering place for ceremonies, polo games, and other important events. Today, the square continues to be a social and cultural hub, where locals and tourists alike can experience the vibrancy of Isfahan.

The square is surrounded by two-story arcades, offering shade and a variety of shops selling traditional Persian crafts, including intricate carpets, fine metalwork, and miniature paintings.
