Facts About Madonna of St. Jerome
The painting "Madonna and Child with Sts Jerome and Mary Magdalene" is a captivating oil on canvas by the eminent Italian Renaissance artist Correggio, created around 1528. This masterpiece is housed at the Galleria Nazionale in Parma, Italy.
Commissioned in 1523 by Briseide Colla for a private chapel in the Church of Sant'Antonio Abate in Parma, the painting garnered acclaim for its "wonderful color" from the noted art historian Giorgio Vasari and even attracted the attention of El Greco, who studied it meticulously.
In the 18th century, amidst efforts to restore the church, the painting drew interest from prominent collectors, including the Kings of Poland and France, as well as the Holy Roman Emperor. Despite these alluring offers, the painting was relocated to the Cathedral of Parma in 1749 and ultimately acquired by the Duchy of Parma.
During the French occupation of northern Italy, the artwork was taken to France. However, it returned to Italy in 1815 and was permanently placed in the Parma gallery. If you visit the chapel of Palais Rohan in Strasbourg, you will find a 1724 copy of this exquisite painting there.
