Bayterek Tower, Astana
Facts and practical information
Bayterek Tower, a modern symbol of Astana, now known as Nur-Sultan, stands as an iconic landmark in the heart of Kazakhstan's capital. This striking structure, reaching a height of 105 meters, was completed in 2002 and has since become a pivotal point of interest for both locals and tourists alike.
Designed by architect Akmurza Rustembekov and conceptualized by the President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, Bayterek Tower embodies a folktale of a mythical tree of life and a magic bird of happiness, Samruk, that lays its egg in the crevice between two branches. The tower's design captures this legend with its white latticed trunk supporting a large, golden sphere, symbolizing the egg of Samruk.
Visitors to Bayterek Tower can ascend to the observation deck within the golden sphere, where they are treated to a panoramic view of the burgeoning cityscape of Nur-Sultan. The deck offers a unique perspective of the city's distinctive blend of futuristic architecture and wide, landscaped boulevards.
Beneath the sphere, the tower features a gallery, an aquarium, and a large exhibition space. One of the key attractions inside is a handprint of President Nazarbayev, where visitors can place their own hand and make a wish.
Bayterek Tower is more than just an observation point; it is a cultural and philosophical symbol of the city, representing aspirations, independence, and the future-oriented spirit of Kazakhstan. The tower is readily accessible to the public, providing an unforgettable experience both by day, when the city stretches out beneath clear skies, and by night, when the structure is illuminated, casting a warm glow over the city.
