Climate of Laos

Laos lies in a tropical climate zone of the monsoon variety. It is characterized by high air temperature, high humidity and frequent rainfall. The southern part of the country with the Si-Phan-Don area is hotter, while the north with the mountainous areas, highlands and the cities of Luang Prabang and Luang Namtha is slightly cooler.

Two seasons can be distinguished in the country.

The rainy season lasts from May to October, during which time there is a southwest monsoon that intensifies rainfall. As a rule, they are violent but short-lived and often occur on sunny days. The highest rainfall is recorded in the south of the country, where it reaches 3,000 mm. The lowest, on the other hand, is in the north, where an average of about 1,000 mm falls annually. The monsoon period is also a time when vegetation grows luxuriantly.

The dry season lasts from November to April. During these months, rain falls extremely rarely, and it is sunny and warm. The spring months (March and April) bring the highest temperatures, which reach up to 28°C in the north and around 30°C in the south. The height of the temperature drops in the winter months, to 16°C in the northern areas and 21°C in the south.
