Kek Lok Si, George Town
Facts and practical information
Kek Lok Si, located in the city of George Town on the island of Penang, Malaysia, is one of the most important Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia. This sprawling hilltop complex, often referred to as the "Temple of Supreme Bliss," merges Chinese, Thai, and Burmese architectural styles, reflecting the multicultural heritage of Penang.
Constructed in 1890, Kek Lok Si has become a significant center of Chinese culture and Buddhism in the region. The temple's centerpiece is the striking seven-story Pagoda of Rama VI (also known as the Pagoda of 10,000 Buddhas), which was completed in 1930 with the patronage of the Thai monarch at the time. Its design incorporates a Chinese octagonal base, Thai middle tier, and Burmese crown, symbolizing the harmony between the different Buddhist traditions.
The temple complex is also famous for its massive statue of Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy, which stands at 36.5 meters in height. Surrounded by a garden and a series of prayer halls, this bronze statue is a recent addition, consecrated in 2002, and is complemented by a 60.9-meter three-tiered roof pavilion that shelters it, known as the Kuan Yin Pavilion.
Visitors to Kek Lok Si are treated to an array of intricate carvings, murals, and sculptures that adorn the halls and courtyards. The temple grounds house various prayer halls, bell towers, and beautifully landscaped gardens, making it both a place of worship and a cultural attraction. During Chinese New Year, the temple is festooned with thousands of lanterns, creating a spectacle of light that attracts pilgrims and tourists alike.
Kek Lok Si is open to the public year-round, with extended hours during the Chinese New Year period. The temple can be accessed via a steep flight of stairs or by a funicular that transports visitors up the hillside, offering panoramic views of George Town and the surrounding area.
