Museo de la Ciudad de Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Tuxtla Gutiérrez
Facts and practical information
The Museo de la Ciudad is a historical precinct located in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Mexico. It has three permanent exhibits and a room for temporary exhibitions; the museum is dedicated to the history and development of Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
The origins of ownership of the land where the building is located go back to Doña Úrsula Espinosa, a wealthy lady of the XIX century; in 1917 an improvised market was built on this site, which was a construction with few walls and columns that did not exceed 2 meters in height, also, "throughout its history it came to function briefly as a bullring". Between 1928 and 1932, when Raymundo E. Enríquez was governor of the state, he sold the land to Rodolfo Ruiz, who in turn transferred it to Noé Vázquez Rincón. In 1940, when Rafael Pascasio Gamboa was governor, he asked him to donate the land for the sole purpose of building the new municipal palace for the capital of Chiapas. Mr. Vázquez Rincón had no objection and without thinking about it, he donated the land to the people of Tuxtla. It was built between 1941 and 1942, designed by the architect Francesco D'Amico and built by the architect and painter Andrés Luna. The building was inaugurated on December 31, 1942 at 9:00 p.m. The cost of construction was $125,000 pesos. The building functioned as the Municipal Palace from 1942 to 1982 for exactly 40 years, being 19 municipal presidents who occupied it. In 1982, the then governor Juan Sabines Gutiérrez, ceded the place to the Confederation of Workers of Mexico. It was until the year 2000 in the government of Pablo Salazar Mendiguchía when the building was formally recovered due to its artistic value, giving the CTM another building and this, on loan to the Foundation Fernando Castañón Gamboa, in order to house the "Museum of the City of Tuxtla Gutiérrez".
