Cave of the Crystals

Facts and practical information
Nestled deep within the limestone hills of Naica, Chihuahua in Mexico, lies an underground marvel known as the Cave of the Crystals or "Cueva de los Cristales". Discovered in the year 2000 by miners excavating a new tunnel for the Industrias Peñoles mining company, this subterranean chamber is home to some of the largest natural crystals ever found.
The cave's extraordinary features are the colossal selenite crystals, some of which measure up to 12 meters in length and weigh approximately 55 tons. These transparent, beam-like formations crisscross the cave, creating a surreal and otherworldly landscape that seems more science fiction than natural phenomenon.
The Cave of the Crystals was formed over hundreds of thousands of years. The key to its creation lies in the rich deposits of minerals and the extremely hot temperatures that persisted in the cave—up to 58 degrees Celsius with 90 to 99 percent humidity. These conditions allowed selenite crystals to grow to unprecedented sizes, undisturbed until their discovery.
Due to the extreme conditions inside the cave, it is largely inaccessible to the public. Scientists and explorers who have entered the cave have done so with specialized cooling suits and for limited periods of time, to conduct studies and document this natural wonder. The cave's existence offers insights into geology, mineralogy, and the extraordinary capabilities of nature.
Unfortunately, the Cave of the Crystals is at risk. With the pumping operations that keep the mine and the cave free of water ceasing, there is a possibility that the cave could once again be submerged, preserving its crystals but also hiding it from the eyes of humanity.
