Historic Centre of Morelia, Morelia
Facts and practical information
The Historic Center of Morelia is located in the Mexican state of Michoacán. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991.
Built in the 16th century, Morelia is a magnificent example of Spanish urban planning, combining the ideas of the Spanish Renaissance with the experience of Mesoamerica. It has a straight layout, which creates the effect that there is always sun on one sidewalk and shade on the opposite sidewalk. Well adapted to the slope of the hills, the streets of Morelia still follow their original path. More than two hundred historic buildings, all in pink rock, traditional of the region, reflect the architectural history of the city. Morelia was the birthplace of many important figures in independent Mexico and has played an important role in the history of its country. It is worth mentioning that the Historic Center of Morelia is the only one in Mexico that does not have a zocalo.
