Pyramid of the Magician, Uxmal
Facts and practical information
The Pyramid of the Magician, also known as the Pyramid of the Dwarf, is an iconic pre-Columbian structure located in the ancient Maya city of Uxmal, Mexico. This impressive step pyramid stands as a testament to the architectural ingenuity of the Maya civilization and is one of the most visited attractions within the Uxmal archaeological site.
Rising to a height of approximately 35 meters, the Pyramid of the Magician is notable for its rounded sides, steep slope, and unusual elliptical base, distinguishing it from the more common rectangular or square bases found in other Maya pyramids. According to Maya legend, it is said to have been built in a single night by a magical dwarf who was hatched from an egg and grew to become the ruler of Uxmal.
The pyramid's construction is believed to have taken place over several centuries, with multiple phases evident in its design. The most prominent of these is the western staircase, which leads to the summit and is adorned with intricate carvings and Chaac masks, representative of the Maya rain god.
Visitors to the Pyramid of the Magician can marvel at the ornate facades and the grandeur of this ancient monument. While climbing the pyramid is no longer permitted to preserve its structure and the safety of tourists, the site offers plenty of opportunities to explore and photograph the pyramid from its base.
