Khorgo

Khorgo, Mongolia is an ancient volcano that stands as a testament to the country's fiery geological past. Situated in the Tariat district in the Arkhangai Province, this extinct volcano is part of the Khorgo-Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur National Park, a region that showcases a dramatic landscape sculpted by volcanic activity.

The Khorgo volcano, with its impressive crater, is believed to have last erupted around 8,000 years ago. Today, it is a popular destination for hikers and geology enthusiasts who climb to its summit to peer into the depths of the crater and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, which includes the pristine Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake, also known as the Great White Lake.

At an elevation of around 2,210 meters, the ascent to Khorgo's crater is relatively accessible, allowing visitors to experience the unique volcanic terrain up close. The area around the volcano is dotted with solidified lava flows, known locally as 'basalt ger' due to their resemblance to the traditional Mongolian dwellings, and these formations add to the otherworldly ambiance of the site.

The Khorgo area is rich in biodiversity, with its lava fields providing a unique habitat for a variety of plant and animal species. The national park also serves as a crucial conservation area, helping to preserve the natural beauty and ecological significance of this volcanic region.
