Sint-Nicolaaskapel, Nijmegen
Facts and practical information
The Saint Nicholas Chapel, also called Valkhofkapel, in Nijmegen is a chapel on the Valkhof, a hill in the center of Nijmegen that was already in use by the Batavians at the beginning of the era. Charlemagne had a palace built on this hill in the eighth century, which was expanded in the following centuries. The present chapel dates from about 1000. The remains of Charlemagne's palace chapel were used in its construction. Because of the similarities with the Aachen palace chapel, the age of the Valkhofkapel was long overestimated; the chapel would date from the eighth century and thus would have been by far the oldest building in the Netherlands. The building was included in the national monument register in 1973.
