Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren, Amersfoort

Rising above the historic streets of Amersfoort, the Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren, or 'Our Lady's Tower,' stands as a testament to the city's medieval past. Known colloquially as 'Lange Jan' ('Long John'), this Gothic church tower is an iconic landmark in the heart of the Netherlands.

With its construction dating back to the 15th century, the Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren reaches a height of 98 meters, making it one of the tallest church towers in the country. The tower is all that remains of the Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk (Church of Our Lady), which was tragically destroyed by an explosion in the 18th century.

The tower boasts an impressive carillon, which consists of 47 bells and is played regularly, filling the streets with melodious chimes that add to the city's charming atmosphere. Visitors can climb the 346 steps to the observation deck where they are rewarded with panoramic views of Amersfoort and the surrounding region. On a clear day, one might even catch a glimpse of the Amsterdam skyline.

The Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren is not only a beloved sight for tourists but also holds historical significance as the reference point for all land surveying in the Netherlands. The Dutch coordinate system, known as the 'Rijksdriehoeksmeting,' uses the tower as its central point, highlighting its importance beyond its architectural beauty.
