Fort bij Veldhuis, Heemskerk
Facts and practical information
The Fort near Veldhuis is a fort of the Defence Line of Amsterdam. It is located near the border of Assendelft and Heemskerk built in 1893.
The fort is a model A type and named after the nearby Veldhuis farm. The fort could hold 310 soldiers in times of war. To the west lies an inundation culvert and to the south a secondary battery. There was also a rampart, behind which troops and equipment could be moved safely. The wall had no water retaining function.
The fort was still used by the German army in World War II as part of their major defense work along the west coast of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. They built a searchlight depot with ramp in the front wall. After the war, between 1947 and 1951, the fort was used as an internment camp for Dutch collaborators. Traces of this can still be found such as bars for windows and doors.
This fort is owned by Staatsbosbeheer and leased to Landschap Noord-Holland. The fort has housed the Fort Veldhuis Air War Museum since 1989.
