Ondermolen D
Facts and practical information
Submill D is a polder mill built around 1635, which was later equipped with an auger. The mill is a thatched octagonal mill of the ground sailor type with an old Dutch sails. The cap of the mill is equipped with a wheelbarrow with wooden rollers, which is crossed from the inside. The mill, like more North Holland polder mills, is an indoor windmill. Lower mill D is equipped with a fixed strut catch.
Originally, the mill was the middle mill of a series of six scoop wheel mills that grinded the Schermer's inner basin into the Schermer basin in three stages. In 1850 this was changed to a two-stage grinding corridor of screw mills, which was in operation until 1926. In 1969/1970 and in 2004 the mill was restored. Submill D is located between Submill C and Upper Mill E on the Noordervaart in Schermerhorn. Unlike the other two windmills, the windmill is in use as a museum windmill and can be visited for a fee. In the mill there is an authentic miller's house. Together with the other Schermer mills, subsmolen D is owned by the Schermer Molens Foundation.
