De Windhond, Zaandam
Facts and practical information
The Windhond is a small scaffold mill on the Zaanse Schans in the municipality of Zaanstad. The small mill was built in 1890 by Jan Zwart as a birthday present for his 7-year-old son Tijmen. This kind of windmills were often built for the youth, who could use it to drive a small business in bricks. The Windhond is the last original bricks mill in the Zaan region.
After wanderings via the Blauwe Pad, where it functioned as a slat picker, and the Mr. Cornelispad, both in Zaandam, the mill was finally donated to the Zaanse Schans Foundation in 1965. The sawmill disappeared then, but the nine pounders for bikestone went with it. In 1980 another grinding stone was added.
The mill has municipal monument status and is in regular operation.
