De Arkduif, Oud-Bodegraven
Facts and practical information
The Arkduif is the name of the scaffold mill built in Bodegraven in 1697 as of 1969.
The mill is located on the Overtocht near the Old Rhine. The mill is a corn mill with a masonry round hull and scaffolding. In the second half of the 19th century parts from other mills were used to repair fire damage. These included parts of the demolished water mill from Nieuwkoop. In 1954 the mill was restored for the first time and in 1982 the last restoration.
The mill is owned by the municipality of Bodegraven and was shut down due to its poor condition. The name De Arkduif was given to the mill only in 1956. The exterior of the mill is mostly white. On September 10, 2010, the mill was reopened after a thorough restoration. The festive inauguration was done by the Provincial Executive member Alfred Blokhuizen. The restoration was financed by the Province of South Holland, central government, municipality of Bodegraven and private individuals. The foundation "Stichting de Arkduif" together with "the friends of the Arkduif" took the initiative for this restoration in 2003.
The mill has an old Dutch style sails of 22.2 meters. The 3.70 m long upper shaft was cast in 1853 by iron foundry L.I. Enthoven & Co. in 's-Hage and has number 101. The king pin is made from an old wooden mortar beam.
The mill is caught by a hinged Flemish block catch consisting of four catches and operated by a rocker stick. The catcher sits between a hangereel and has a toggle.
The mill is put to the wind with a wheelbarrow. The wheelbarrow consists of a wooden roller carriage with 36 iron and 12 pockmarked wooden rollers.
For lapping the grain, there is a trailing crane.
In the mill there are three grinding couples with regulators and a Straver brush tube. For grain transport there is a wind driven Jacob's ladder.
The mill house is currently in use as a brewery and is not currently available for viewing.
