Theater aan de Parade, 's-Hertogenbosch
Facts and practical information
The Theater aan de Parade is a theater in the city center of 's-Hertogenbosch. It is located on the Parade.
The building was constructed in 1976 as a replacement for the theater built in 1934. During World War II, the building was damaged during the liberation of 's-Hertogenbosch. For a while there were plans to rebuild the theater in Het Bossche Broek. It was decided to restore the original building, while new construction would be just as expensive.
The history of the Theater aan de Parade begins in 1836 when the Sociëteit Casino is established on the Papenhulst. In 1853 a theater auditorium was added. The name Casino was retained even after the move to the building on the Parade. Only in 1994 did the name change to Theater aan de Parade, to avoid confusion with a Casino.
In January 2015, the City Council decides to build a new building for the theater. Residents are given a say in the design. The discovery of asbestos in the current building causes a temporary closure of several months of the current theater in 2016 and, in addition to an increase in construction prices, is also responsible for the conclusion that the proposed price for the new building can not be met. A new building would cost €71 million compared to the planned 50 million. The planned closure in 2017, and the opening for a new building in 2020 is called off. In 2018, the plan evolves to a renovation building with recovery of foundations and concrete structures, among others. A new planned completion date of 2023 is pushed forward.
On August 31, 2020, alderman Van Olden will close the old theater on the Parade. Architectural firm NOAHH, the designers of Tivoli in Utrecht, will design the new Theater aan de Parade. NOAHH's design contributes to the further development of 's-Hertogenbosch into the cultural city of the South.
