Vijfhuizer Molen, Haarlem
Facts and practical information
The Vijfhuizer Mill is a polder mill built in 1874 on the Vijfhuizen in Haarlem. The Vijfhuizer used to drain the Vijfhuizerpolder.
The mill replaced a mill that burned down on December 31, 1859. It is a thatched octagonal mill of the ground sailor type with an old Dutch sails. In 1924, permission was granted to build a home in the mill. A large family has lived in the house. In 1938 an electrically driven auger was installed. Wind-powered drainage remained possible, which proved to be a good choice during World War II.
After World War II, windmilling became less and less common and the mill fell into disrepair. Restorations were carried out in 1973 and in the 1990s that did not have the intended success. In 2010, the tail was restored, after which the mill can be properly seasoned again. The interior will be brought back to the situation during the period the mill was still in use. The Vijfhuizer can be visited when it is running.
