De Walmolen, Doetinchem

The Walmolen is a shore and rack mill built in 1851 to replace the burnt down standerd mill and is located at IJsselkade 30 in Doetinchem. There is 1 pair of grinding stones. The stones are artificial stone with a diameter of 130 cm.

The flight deck is 23 m and has welded, iron rods, which are streamlined with Van Bussel noses and fitted with brake flaps.

The cap of the mill is covered with thatch and equipped with an English wheelbarrow, which is a wheelbarrow with iron rails and rollers. The windrow is operated with a windrow reel.

The upper shaft is a cast iron shaft from the Prins van Oranje company, dating from 1879. The shaft is lubricated with lard and the teeth on the gears with beeswax. The catch, which is used to slow down the sails, is a Flemish catch operated with a lever.

The lazy work for luffing the bags of grain and shooting the grinding material is a dragging lazy work.

In 1910, the cap, the gable and the scaffolding were demolished, but in 1965 the mill was restored with parts from the mill De Hoop in Lienden. During the 1965 restoration, the rods were streamlined with Van Bussel noses. In 1986 new rods were put in and in 1992 some more repairs were made.

The preceding wooden stand mill served as a runner mill. The stone mill was used until 1908, when the advent of steam power made the use of wind power obsolete. In the 1950s there was a decision by the city council to demolish the mill but due to protests by some citizens, who appealed and formed an action group, the mill was narrowly saved. After the restorations at the end of the 20th century, the mill was used for many years as accommodation for the tourist information office.
