Fusilla Monument Hattem is a monument located on the IJssel River on the Geldersedijk near Hattem in the province of Gelderland in memory of six prisoners who were executed by the German occupying forces just before the liberation. These prisoners, who were on a death list, were held in the House of Detention in Zwolle and were executed as revenge for the sabotage of the railroad line near Oldebroek, on the railroad section Zwolle - Amersfoort.
The monument bears the names of six of those executed below, followed by the place or country they came from.
D. Eskes pseudonym ´Alex´, was a commander of the Radio Service of the Council of Resistance. He fell into the hands of the German occupying forces on 9 February 1945. Dirk Eskes is buried at the N.H. cemetery in Garderen. He received posthumously on March 12, 1947 the Medal of Freedom without a palm.
G.B. Buunk was a Dutch resistance fighter and in military service as a sergeant capitulant, having fled to England. On 10 February he was captured in Vroomshoop. Ben Buunk was reburied with military honors on October 15, 2015 at the Loenen Field of Honor in Loenen, at the request of the family.
F. van Laaken pseudonym ´Lex´, was leader of the transmitter network of the Radio Service of the Council of Resistance, he was arrested at the same time as Eskes. Posthumously decorated with the Bronze Lion. He is buried in the family grave at the Noorderbegraafplaats in Hilversum.
J.P.S. Austin was a Sergeant of the Royal Berkshire Regiment. He was part of the so-called Jedburgh team of Special Operations, which was dropped at a drop-off site near Rijssen on 12 September 1944. Austin was a telegraph operator and had to maintain contact with military intelligence in London and with the, behind the advancing Allied army, transmitting station Wensum. He had a hiding address in Daarle. Austin is buried in the Hattem Honour Court, in the municipal cemetery there.
G. van Unen was because of economic crime imprisoned in the House of Detention in Zwolle, he is buried in the Municipal Cemetery in Wezep.
D. van Diepen was imprisoned for economic crime in the House of Detention in Zwolle, he is buried in the Municipal Cemetery in Wezep.
