Gemeentegrot, Oud-Valkenburg
Facts and practical information
The Gemeentegrot, Gemeentegroeve, Gemeentegroef or Valkenburgergroeve in the Dutch Limburg town of Valkenburg is a limestone quarry, where marl was extracted until the 1950s.
The marl originated in the time that South Limburg was still a sea. That explains the large amount of shells that are still in the marl. The Romans were already mining marl in, among others, the Municipal Cave. The cave was mapped in the 1960s by G. Essers.
Artwork in the form of drawings or sculptures has been installed in numerous places in the quarry.
The entrance gate and the shelter chapel are national monuments.
The quarry is connected underground to the Sacred Heart quarry and the Wilhelmina quarry.
