Nieuw Leven
Facts and practical information
Nieuw Leven is a standerd mill in Valburg in the Dutch province of Gelderland.
The mill was built in 1750. Between 1900 and 1996 the mill was owned by the Hooyer family. In the latter year, the mill was moved a short distance and restored by the OpNieuw Leven Foundation.
Because of the sagging of the cabinet, the mill was becoming increasingly heavy to crawl. Therefore, a bream was placed under the stone beam and slings under the long burrie beams. On top of the standerd, around the stormpegs, is a bronze plate. The mill can now be turned to wind even by pushing against the tail instead of with the wheel.
The rods made by the manufacturer Bremer from Adorp have a length of 23 meters and are equipped with the Old Dutch fencing with sails. The interior of the flour mill consists of two pairs of grinding stones. A rear mill has 15der blue stones and the front mill 16der artificial stones. The mill also has a stone crane for lifting the stone and there is a bag elevator.
The wooden shaft was replaced in 1943 by a 4.5 meter long cast iron shaft from the mill De Hoop in Elst. In the coupling beam one can still see the hollowing out, which was necessary for the wooden upper axle at the time.
Around the upper wheel is a wooden hoop on which the Flemish catch engages.
Volunteer millers operate the mill weekly. Then the mill is open to the public.
